Legal & Professional Services

Complex matters and regulatory change, where professional judgement must rest on attributable sources.

01 · THE PROBLEM OR DECISION

A team must assess a complex matter or a regulatory change. The matter evidence, approved guidance and relevant expertise sit with different people, and the reasoning behind earlier advice is hard to find.

02 · WHO WOULD USE HOW

Partners and senior lawyers, in-house counsel, associates, knowledge and risk teams and relevant specialists, working from matter documents, the organisation’s approved guidance and its own earlier work.

03 · HOW HOW COULD SUPPORT THE WORK

Bring matter evidence, approved guidance and relevant expertise together so legal teams can examine complex questions, coordinate work and retain organisational learning. Support professional judgement with attributable sources, clear responsibilities and a record of the reasoning behind decisions.

04 · OUTCOMES YOU COULD EVALUATE
  • Time to bring the relevant evidence and expertise together
  • Clarity of responsibilities on a matter
  • Traceability of the sources behind advice
  • Reuse of approved learning on later matters
ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLE · ASSESSING A REGULATORY CHANGE

A team assesses how a regulatory change affects a group of client matters.

  1. Frame the question

A partner sets out what has changed, which matters may be affected and who needs to be involved.

  2. Bring the evidence together

The team gathers the relevant matter documents and approved internal guidance. Access follows matter-level permissions, so each person sees only what they are entitled to see.

  3. Draw on expertise and challenge

Regulatory, sector and risk specialists contribute in a Structured Discussion. Differing views and open questions stay visible. Wise Owl can help summarise material and point to attributable sources; it does not give legal advice.

  4. Decide and record

The responsible lawyer agrees the approach to the advice. A Decision Receipt records the sources, reasoning, responsibilities and next actions. It is private by default.

  5. Review and reuse

Once the change takes effect, the team reviews what happened. Learning that its owners approve for sharing can inform later matters, without exposing client information.

Not every question needs every step. Many questions are settled in a conversation between colleagues and go no further. A Decision Hub and Decision Receipt are used only when a matter needs explicit ownership and a record.

Illustrative application, not a description of a current deployment. Work would be set up around client confidentiality and matter-level permissions, and professional review stays with qualified people. HOW works with the sources an organisation approves; this example does not assume a connection to any legal research database.
